Spirulina sp is a type of blue-green algae sold as a health supplement. You can add Spirulina sp to food when dried or take Spirulina sp as a dietary supplement in the form of tablets or powder. Spirulina has many purported health benefits. However, clinical evidence does not support all of these purported benefits. You should speak with a doctor prior to consuming a Spirulina sp supplement.
Uses
According to "Miracle Superfood: Wild Blue-Green Algae," you can use Spirulina sp to treat a specific kind of mouth and tongue ulcer called leukoplakia. Additionally, as a nutritional supplement, you can use blue-green algae to promote general health and a strong immune system. Although not confirmed by scientific research, benefits associated with the consumption of blue-green algae may relate to the many biological compounds contained within the blue-green algae plant.
Vitamins and Minerals
Spirulina sp contains several vitamins and minerals including vitamins A, C, E, B-12 and other B complex vitamins, as well as potassium, calcium, and iron. Spirulina sp is also a source of protein. However, when compared to other meats and sources of protein, Spirulina sp costs considerably more per ounce than other protein sources.
Side Effects
Some people experience an allergic reaction to Spirulina sp. While allergic reactions to this algae are not common, in some cases, these allergic reactions are quite severe. Indications of an allergic reaction to Spirulina sp include a sudden rash or localized itching on your skin, swelling or itching of your face including your mouth or tongue, difficulty breathing and a strong dizzy feeling.
Other Risks
This type of blue-green algae contains compounds that can cause liver damage in certain individuals. Signs of liver damage include dark urine, yellow eyes or skin, stomach pain and vomiting. In addition, teas and other products made from Spirulina sp may contain other, foreign substances. The Federal Drug Administration has not approved Spirulina sp for use as a dietary supplement, nor has it confirmed the purported health benefits of blue-green algae.
