One of the difficult parts to weight loss is finding ways to curb the urge to snack. Snacking commonly occurs in the afternoon or after dinner when you sit down to watch television. The South Beach Diet puts further restrictions on your snack choices, but popcorn may offer a good, filling option. Knowing which phases of the South Beach Diet allow popcorn and how much you can eat may help prevent you from turning to unhealthy snacks.

Phase 1

During the first phase of the South Beach Diet you will need to avoid carbs, including popcorn. In this two-week period your snacks will consist of proteins, such as fat-free turkey breast and mozzarella cheese.

Phase 2

After the first two weeks, you can add certain carbs back into your diet. You can have popcorn, but you cannot have more than three cups of popcorn each day.

Types

The South Beach Diet recommends that you only eat popcorn in specified ways. You can eat air-popped popcorn without added butter. Microwave popcorn works well as long as you select a plain variety that does not contain unhealthy oils. You may also cook the popcorn on your stove top, using a small amount of allowed oil, such as canola oil.

Considerations

Eating popcorn, or any other food, every day could result in boredom, and this could lead you to choose a snack not allowed on the South Beach Diet. You may want to alternate your snacks, or mix in a few nuts or other allowed foods to keep your food choices interesting.
