Dr. Arthur Agatston created the South Beach Diet to help reduce the risk of heart disease through weight loss and healthful eating. In evaluating his patients, Dr. Agatston determined that many people with heart disease carry their weight in their midsection. As part of the weight loss claims for the diet, he states that much of the initial weight loss drops from the midsection. However, people with any type of body shape may benefit from the South Beach Diet.

Pear Shape

Some describe the way bodies hold their weight as either a pear shape or an apple shape. People who carry their weight in their stomachs have an apple shape, and those who carry weight in their hips, buttocks and thighs have a pear shape. Dr. Agatston states that, in his experience, patients with an apple shape have a greater risk for heart disease. Following the South Beach Diet does not relate specifically to the shape of your body, but gives you a set of guidelines for eating that may help you lose the extra weight.

Weight Loss

In the first two weeks of the South Beach Diet, Dr. Agatston states that many people lose between 8 and 10 lbs. People with an apple shape may lose this weight from their stomach, and many see a noticeable difference. However, pear-shaped people can also lose weight, but your weight loss may not come from one particular location, making your initial weight loss harder to spot.

Exercise

Adding exercise should help you lose weight. Pear-shaped bodies will benefit from cardio exercises, such as running, to help burn fat. Some people may focus on the lower body, but to balance out the shape of your body, don't neglect your shoulders, chest and arms. If your doctor feels you are healthy enough to increase your activity level, consult a trainer to find an exercise regimen that will work best for your weight loss goals.

Considerations

Do not begin any diet or exercise plan without first talking with your doctor. Some people have specific dietary needs and following a restrictive diet such as the South Beach Diet may not provide the best options. Your doctor can help you determine whether the South Beach Diet is the best for your health.
