Viva prenatal vitamins are a vitamin supplement brand for use by women who are expecting to become pregnant, are currently pregnant or are breast-feeding. Prenatal vitamins contain essential vitamins that you require during pregnancy and are commonly found in foods. As with any supplement, you are at greater risk of developing an allergic reaction when you introduce a new substance into your body. If you develop symptoms after taking Viva prenatal vitamins, call your doctor for further evaluation. You should take all supplements under the direction of your doctor.

Allergic Reaction

Viva prenatal vitamins contain vitamins and inactive ingredients that could trigger an allergic reaction in some people. Although most people do not develop an allergy to Viva prenatal vitamins, a reaction is possible. When you ingest the supplement, your immune system can mistake one of the ingredients as a dangerous chemical and attack it with antibodies, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. This attack triggers other cells in your body to create chemicals to defend you. The release of theses chemicals causes most allergy symptoms. You can be allergic to one or more of the synthetic vitamins or an inactive ingredient.

Symptoms

You may take several doses of the prenatal vitamin before developing symptoms. Your immune system may also require time to build up a sensitivity to the allergen in the vitamin before symptoms occur. Common allergy symptoms to vitamins include sniffling, sneezing, skin rashes, itchiness, headaches, asthma, fatigue, wheezing and nasal congestion, according to Health Tree. An allergic reaction to Viva prenatal vitamins can also cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain and cramping within minutes of ingestion. Not all stomach problems are the result of an allergy, and you should consult your doctor for an accurate diagnosis. Immediately report to your doctor any reactions that you develop to the vitamins.

Severe Reaction

Drugs.com warns that a severe allergic reaction may occur while taking Viva prenatal vitamins. This severe reaction, also called anaphylaxis, occurs when your body develops an extreme, whole-body allergic reaction that can be life-threatening. Common symptoms of anaphylaxis are shortness of breath, swelling in your face, lips, tongue or throat, a faint and fast heart rate, dizziness, a metallic taste in your mouth, mental confusion and hives. Call 911 at the first signs of these symptoms to prevent additional complications.

Testing and Treatment

Your doctor will perform allergy tests to determine which ingredient in the prenatal vitamin is causing your allergic reaction. Once he has a diagnosis, your doctor will likely recommend that you stop taking Viva prenatal vitamins and will prescribe a different prenatal vitamin that does not contain the allergen.
