Physical education teachers must teach children the values of living an active, healthy lifestyle while incorporating physical activities into classes. Gymnasium games give children the opportunity to burn calories while participating in cardiovascular fitness activities. A major responsibility of physical fitness instructors is to create games and activities that make physical fitness enjoyable for students.

Dodge Ball

Dodge ball is a traditional favorite gym activity. Divide the students into two groups and have each group line up on opposite sides of the gym. Place the dodge ball between the two teams in a central location, blow the whistle and the first child to get to the ball gets the first throw. The object is to eliminate members from the opposite team by hitting them with the ball while standing on your team's half of the court. However, instruct the children not to aim for the other children's faces, as this will result in the thrower being eliminated from the game. If a child catches a thrown ball, the thrower is out of the game. The last child standing wins the game of dodge ball.

Parachute Balls

A game of parachute balls teaches children control and the value of team work. Use a parachute and several balls of various sizes. Instruct the children to grab a section of the parachute and begin walking around in a circle to keep the parachute constantly moving. Toss the balls onto the parachute and instruct the children to start moving their arms in an up-and-down motion to get the balls bouncing on the parachute. Let them see how high they can get the balls to bounce without letting any balls fall off the parachute. To turn this into a game, divide the children into groups, and judge to see which team can get their balls bouncing the highest without any balls bouncing off the parachute.

Shark Attack

Shark attack teaches children patience by waiting until the last possible moment to flee from the sharks. In this game, divide the children into two teams. One team will be the fish and one will be the sharks. One team will have their backs to the other team, and the other team will try to quietly sneak up on the other team. When the fish leader feels that the other team is getting just close enough to threaten the fish, he yells, "Shark!" and the fish turn and run after the sharks. If a fish tags a shark, he becomes a fish. Take turns letting each group be fish, and the team with the most members at the end of the class wins the game.

Twisted Tag

Twisted tag is just like the traditional game of tag, except the children must listen to the teacher's changing instructions throughout the game while playing. The teacher will call out a body part, and the children must try to tag another person on that body part. The tagged children will freeze until another student tags them on any other part of their body. The teacher will continue calling out different body parts throughout the game to challenge the children's listening and concentration abilities.
