Cooking corn on the cob on the grill provides a fresh, crisp, delicious side dish that complements just about any lunch or dinner, indoors or out. Grilled corn on the cob requires no additional flavoring, but also supports a nearly endless variety of seasonings, making it a versatile vegetable you can prepare differently every time. A medium-sized ear of corn has only about 110 calories and provides fiber, thiamin and folate. The only caveat is that you apply butter and salt judiciously, since the saturated fat and sodium can make corn on the cob considerably less healthy.

Step 1

Pull off some of the outer leaves of the husk on ears of corn with particularly thick husks. Leave the corn fully encased, though.

Step 2

Soak the ears of corn in cold water in a large pot for half an hour. Ensure that all the ears are totally submerged. This moisture helps steam the kernels during grilling.

Step 3

Preheat your grill to a medium heat.

Step 4

Peel the husks down to the end of the corn cobs, but don't remove them. Pull the silk off the ears.

Step 5

Coat the corn with melted butter or a vegetable oil. Sprinkle on salt, ground black pepper and other seasonings to taste.

Step 6

Pull the husks back up over the ears of corn. Tie them at the open end with pieces of removed husk or twine.

Step 7

Place the ears on the grill for five minutes, and then flip them over. Grill the ears for another five minutes. Move the ears off the direct heat, and let them cook slowly off to the side or on the grill's top rack for about another 10 minutes. Remove the corn on the cob from the grill when you see imprints of the kernels in the husk.

Step 8

Allow the corn on the cob cool for several minutes. Remove the husks.
