Juicing as an alternative healing method in chronic diseases such as hypothyroidism is a controversial subject amongst healthcare professionals. Diets rich in raw foods help to cleanse the colon, detoxify the body and restore a balance of depleted minerals. In addition to the healing benefits from a live, raw food diet, other advantages include renewed energy and vitality. What Is Hypothyroidism?

The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland located next to the larynx in the neck, and is one of the body’s most important glands. The thyroid secretes a hormone that helps every cell, tissue and organ to function correctly. The cause of an underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism, is unknown, but factors such as a poor diet, too much or insufficient amounts of iodine and high stress levels can act as triggers. In hypothyroidism, the body’s immune system produces antibodies that damage the thyroid instead of protecting it. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include low energy, metabolism changes, low body temperature and low libido.

Health Through Juicing

Health professionals, doctors and nutritionists support evidence of the positive effects vegetable juices have on those with chronic disease. Juicing using live raw foods and plants such as leafy green vegetables, carrots, cucumbers and green herbs act as natural body cleansers and detoxifiers. Vegetable juices are easily absorbed into the body to have a more immediate effect to replenishing depleted minerals and vitamins. Stanford Medicine’s Cancer Center advises that the best selection of juices comes in nature's own containers: fresh fruits and vegetables. Fresh juice is loaded with cancer-fighting phytochemicals and vitamins in a state easily absorbed by the body. Juiced organic vegetables boost and supplement body storehouses as they quickly enter the bloodstream and begin their complex healing work.

Lifestyle Changes

An American Thyroid Association press release reports that Americans need reliable information about lifestyle and healthcare choices and good information about healthy lifestyles and prevention. Morgan Spurlock’s groundbreaking documentary ‘Simply Raw’ records transformational lifestyle changes of six Americans suffering from chronic disease. The film chronicles their journey as they reverse disease through juicing and a live, raw foods diet. Given the seriousness of thyroid disease, healthy alternatives such as juicing are worthy of exploration.

Thyroid Replacement Treatments

Even with key lifestyle and dietary changes, doctors and nutritionists advise the use of thyroid replacement therapy. The thyroid, as an essential gland needed for body function, may need assistance from a prescribed synthetic hormone such as levothyroxine to keep vital organs optimally working. Always consult a primary health care provider when considering any changes in diet or medication.
