The Roman restaurateur Alfredo di Lello created his signature sauce in the 1920s. Alfredo sauce is a rich, creamy white sauce that, although it can be added to a variety of Italian noodles to form a meal, is traditionally paired with fettuccine noodles. The sauce can be bulked up with the addition of meat, such as chicken or sausage, or vegetables, such as spinach or broccoli. Making your own Alfredo sauce can be done quickly and easily in a few simple steps.

Step 1

Melt the butter in a large saucepan set over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the whipping cream, salt and black pepper to the pan.

Step 3

Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat.

Step 4

Continue to heat the mixture gently for three to five minutes, or until it begins to thicken.

Step 5

Remove the pan from the heat and add 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese.

Step 6

Gently incorporate the cheese into the sauce until fully melted. Once the sauce is mixed, the sauce is ready to be added to your dish.
