Freezing is an easy method of preserving cookies for up to four weeks so you don't have to throw out extra cookies if you can't eat them all within a few days. Keeping cookies in the freezer also saves you time. Instead of baking a batch of cookies every time you want them, double or triple your recipe and freeze half of them. When you feel like a sweet treat or need a simple dessert for guests, you will have the cookie stash ready in your freezer.
Step 1
Transfer the cookies to a wire cooling rack when they are finished baking. Wait until they are cooled completely before preparing them to be frozen.
Step 2
Cool cookie bars in the pan before cutting the bars into the desired serving size and removing them from the pan. Allow the cookie bars to cool further on a cooling rack if necessary.
Step 3
Place two cookies with their flat sides together and wrap the cookie sandwich in a small square of plastic wrap. Secure the plastic wrap tightly to protect the cookies. Continue wrapping pairs of cookies together, which helps protect the cookies and allows you to take out a few cookies at a time for use. Wrap cookie bars individually in squares of plastic wrap so that they don't stick together.
Step 4
Place the wrapped cookies into a large plastic freezer bag. Arrange them in rows or stacks within the bag for better organization.
Step 5
Fill the bag with the wrapped cookies, leaving enough room at the top to close the bag without crushing them.
Step 6
Squeeze any excess air from the freezer bag and seal the closure tightly all the way across the top of the bag.
Step 7
Write the cookie variety on the outside of the freezer bag as well as the date so that you know how long they have been in the freezer. Cookies typically last for three or four weeks in the freezer if they are properly wrapped.
Tips and Warnings
- Use a plastic, freezer-safe container with a secure lid in place of the freezer bag if desired. This reduces the chance of the cookies being crushed or broken in the freezer. If you are planning to freeze more than one type of cookie, use a separate freezer bag or storage container for each type so that the flavors don't mingle. Cookie dough can also be frozen, either in one large block or individual balls. If you want to freeze individual pieces of dough, scoop them onto a cookie sheet and freeze them until solid. Place all of the frozen cookie dough balls in a freezer bag for storage.
