To the naked eye, there isn't really much difference between a regular hockey stick and a goalie stick. However, goalie sticks are wider and have a more pronounced curve in the blade. It is important to size your hockey stick properly before buying it; the stick should reach to just below your chin when placed vertically. Taping your stick is an important process in maintaining the health and longevity of your goalie stick, as well as improving your performance on the ice.
Step 1
Wrap the hockey tape around the top knob of the hockey stick continuously until you have reached the desired thickness. Taping the knob allows you to have a better grip on the stick without having your hand slide off. The knob should be thick enough that your gloved hand doesn't slide off the stick easily.
Step 2
Unravel 1 foot of tape and cut it. Starting at the knob, wind the tape in a spiral around the stick until it runs out. Make sure to twist the tape as you go along so the sticky side is exposed. Twisting the tape to expose the sticky side will help you to get a better grip on the stick once the top layer of tape is added.
Step 3
Wrap another layer of tape fully around the spiraled twisted tape, starting at the top knob and working your way down to the base of the spiral. Press down on the new layer of tape to make sure it's bonded with the twisted tape.
Step 4
Wrap the blade of the stick starting at the top of the heel. Circle the tape around the blade, covering the entire blade to the tip.
