Looking at the net and strings on a lacrosse head for the first time might prompt you to ask the store to put the net on a new head. But if you take a closer look, you'll see the net is attached with a larger string across the top, smaller strings along each side and the bottom of the head, and one or more doubled shooting strings woven across the face of pocket. Lacrosse head kits with diamond mesh nylon net are available with a range of colored strings that match most team colors.
Top String
Step 1
Place the new head on a clean work table and stretch the mesh netting in both directions by hand to relax the weave and fold one of the short edges to make doubled diamonds.
Step 2
Place the net on the head with the doubled diamonds at the top and align the diamonds with the holes across the top of the head.
Step 3
Tie an overhand knot at one end of the top string as a stop. Start at one side of the head and thread the pointed end of the string through the first hole and the first set of double diamonds. Pull the end of the string through until the knot seats against the outside of the head.
Step 4
Loop the string over the top of the head and thread the end through the second hole and up through the second double diamond. Pull the string tight and loop it over the top of the head.
Step 5
Continue to stitch the net across the top of the head in the same way. When you reach the other side of the head, thread the end of the string through the last hole and tie a loose overhand knot near the outside of the head. Hold the knot against the head with one hand and pull the string to tighten the knot.
Side and Bottom Strings
Step 1
Fold the long side string in half and cut the string at the fold with scissors to make two side strings. Tie a double overhand knot near one end of one string. Insert the opposite end of the string through the bottom hole on one side of the head from the outside and pull it through until the knot seats.
Step 2
Weave the side string through the first diamond on that side of the net and through the second hole at that side of the head. Continue to weave the string up the side of the head and the net, making sure not to thread it through one of the larger holes for the shooting strings. Thread it through the last hole at the top of the head.
Step 3
Tie a loose overhand knot on the outside as before. Push the knot against the outside of the head with one hand and tighten the string. Repeat this and attach the other side of the net to the head using the other section of side string.
Step 4
Pull the bottom edge of the net over the bottom face of the head. Hold the net against the bottom of the head with one hand and shape the contour of the pocket with your fist or a lacrosse ball.
Step 5
Fold the bottom of the net where it meets the head to make a course of double diamonds. Tie an overhand knot at one end of the short bottom string. Start at one side and stitch the bottom of the net the same way you stitched the sides. Finish with an overhand knot pushed against the outside of the head as before.
Shooting Strings
Step 1
Tie the ends of two shooting strings together using a double overhand knot. Thread the loose ends of the strings through the outside of the large hole near the upper side of the head and pull the strings through until the knot seats against the head.
Step 2
Weave the shooting strings through each diamond as you work across the face of the net. Feed the ends through the corresponding hole at the opposite side of the head. Tie the ends together with an overhand knot, push the knot against the head and pull the strings tight. Tie a second overhand knot and push it against the first, then pull the strings tight.
Step 3
Tie the ends of the remaining shooting strings together with a double overhand knot. Feed the ends of the strings through the outside of the other large hole on the head and pull the knot tight against the head. Weave the strings across the face as before and secure them with a double overhand knot.
Tips and Warnings
- Make a shallow pocket and weave the shooting strings tighter for stronger throws.Trim the tag ends of the strings with scissors, if desired.
