As in any extreme sport, mastering the basic techniques will allow you to quickly progress onto new and more exciting maneuvers. In BMX, maintaining control of the bike during high-speed tricks requires an increased balancing skill. Professional BMX rider Kevin Porter recommends starting out with an elementary trick known as the bunny hop. The bunny hop allows you to lift both tires off the riding terrain. Test drive a few BMXs to find a bike that corresponds with your physical dimensions.

Step 1

Roll your BMX to a suitable riding location that features a level terrain and low traffic flow. Place your hands on the rubber grips of the BMX handlebars. Swing your leg over the top tube of the BMX to straddle the bike.

Step 2

Align your dominant foot onto the corresponding flat pedal. Lift your nondominant foot onto the other pedal while bending your knees. Rotate the handlebars of your BMX bike to balance in a stationary position.

Step 3

Lower your foot to the ground if you lose control of the bike. Practice this balancing exercise on a regular basis to increase your bike-handling ability. Pedal across the riding terrain until you attain a comfortable speed.

Step 4

Bend your knees to balance your riding stance. Extend your legs while pulling up on the handlebar grips. Jump vertically to lift the tires of the BMX off the ground.

Step 5

Push down on the handlebars to keep the tires parallel to the ground. Bend your knees as the tires descend onto the riding terrain. Practice these riding techniques to master an essential maneuver known as the bunny hop.
