Aloe vera gel is used primarily as a topical treatment for burns and other skin problems, but both the gel and juice of this plant are promoted for internal uses as well. The juice is the extract from inside the outer lining of the leaves, which may be included in products called whole-leaf aloe vera. Aloe vera juice is linked to several side effects. Consult a qualified health care provider before consuming this substance.
Laxative Effects
Aloe vera juice can relieve constipation because one of its components, barbaloin, has stimulant laxative properties. This is a strong laxative and can be irritating to the gastrointestinal system. Possible side effects from this chemical activity as listed by the American Cancer Society include abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and electrolyte imbalances. The ACS recommends not using aloe vera for longer than two weeks if you're attempting to relieve constipation. Better yet, use other dietary and treatment options for constipation that are safer.
Blood Sugar
People with type 2 diabetes may be able to lower their blood sugar by consuming 1 tbsp. of aloe juice twice per day, according to the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. People prone to hypoglycemia may have problems when consuming aloe vera juice, and diabetic patients taking medication to regulate blood sugar may need to adjust their dosage to prevent hypoglycemia.
Warning
Aloe vera injections have been purported to be useful for treating cancer. Available scientific evidence does not support this claim, states the ACS. In addition, aloe vera injections are dangerous, because injected aloe is toxic. Several people have died as a direct result of using these injections, which are illegal in the United States.
Hepatitis
A very rare side effect of aloe may be toxic hepatitis, or liver inflammation caused by a reaction to chemicals. Three cases have been reported that were associated with consuming aloe preparations, according to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Liver function returned to normal after the individuals stopped ingesting aloe.
