When you make meals for your family, you want them to be as nutritious and healthful as possible. One way to ensure that the foods you are serving your loved ones are nutritious is to use a holistic approach to food selection. Holistic family nutrition considers the origins of the food, as well as what the foods will be doing in the body once eaten.
Buy Organic
Organic foods are foods grown without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or added hormones. When you select organic produce for your family, instead of the standard foods grown with chemicals, your family will not be exposed to residual fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides remaining on the produce. When you buy organic meats, the you will not be exposing your family to added growth hormones that is normally found in standard meats.
Buy Locally
When you purchase the food for your family locally, the food does not need to travel across a long distance in order to arrive on your dinner table. This not only decreases the amount of petroleum needed to get the food to your door, but allows you to eat the foods when they are perfectly ripened. Foods that are shipped across the country or across the world are often picked when they are under-ripe, then ripened by using chemical sprays or radiation. When you buy your foods locally, you are giving your family foods that are free of radiation and chemical ripening sprays.
Drink Filtered Water
Tap water that is not filtered can contain heavy metals and chemical additives that are added to the water in order to kill off dangerous microbes. However, if you give your family unfiltered tap water, you are actually giving them water that contains these unwanted metals and chemicals, such as chlorine. Give your family filtered water by using a table top of under-the-counter water filter, which will remove any heavy metals and chemicals in the tap water.
Avoid Processing
Processed foods often contain artificial flavorings, artificial colors, hydrogenated fats and chemical preservatives that are not healthy for people to eat. If you want your family to eat a healthful diet, avoid purchasing ans serving processed foods to your family. These foods can include sweetened cereals, cookies, snack cakes, candies, chips and crackers.
