Omega-3 fatty acids may help relieve some symptoms of bipolar disorder, also called manic-depressive illness. The disorder causes extreme mood swings in people, who experience periods of behaving overly excited and ambitious as well as phases of deep depression. Bipolar patients require treatment that includes therapy and medication, such as antidepressants or mood stabilizers. Omega-3s, found in certain kinds of fish, nuts and seeds, may improve moods by replenishing nutritional deficiencies.

Disrupts Life

Family members, friends or co-workers may not notice bipolar signs immediately because the symptoms may develop gradually or appear to be separate, unrelated problems, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. The disorder eventually interferes with a person's life, causing family and work-related difficulties. Inability to handle everyday situations may result. Treatment with a mental health professional can help lead patients to enjoying normal and productive lives.

Extreme Symptoms

The manic and depressive periods may each last for days or weeks. During the manic phase, the person may seem overjoyed and optimistic, even to the point of having unrealistic aims. Bipolar patients may have racing thoughts and talk very fast, moving rapidly from one subject to another. They may act restless, become easily distracted or engage in risky behavior. The depressive stage brings feelings of emptiness and worry. Concentrating and decision-making become difficult. Loss of interest in hobbies or once enjoyable activities, changes in eating and sleeping habits, loss of energy, and suicidal thoughts or actions may occur.

Omega-3 Role

Deficiencies in omega-3 fatty acids have symptoms that include poor memory, mood swings, depression and fatigue, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Omega-3s may affect brain function by playing a role in memory, mental performance and behavioral activities. Taking fish oil, which contains omega-3s, in conjunction with medication may improve conditions for patients with depression or bipolar disorder, but research continues. MedlinePlus, an online resource of the National Institutes of Health, points out that fish oil may help improve symptoms during the depressive phase for bipolar patients, but it may not work for the manic periods.

Foods

Oily fish containing high amounts of omega-3s include mackerel, tuna, salmon, sardines, halibut and herring. Walnuts, soybeans, flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds also have omega-3s. Fish oil supplements, often made from fish rich in omega-3s, may help people who do not consume enough fish. Bipolar patients should discuss dietary and supplemental intake with their doctors. Although nutrition can assist patients, primary treatment consists of therapy to understand their condition and medication with the goal of normalizing moods.
