A healthy respiratory system, which includes your lungs, trachea, mouth, nose and diaphragm, allows you to breathe with ease, protects your body from various toxins and supplies your blood with oxygen. A variety of common illnesses, including colds, allergies, sinus infections, asthma and bronchitis, interfere with respiration, causing congestion, throat pain, wheezing and exhaustion. In severe cases, they disrupt normal breathing. Although dietary measures should not replace doctor-recommended treatment, certain foods may promote respiratory health and healing.
Carrots and Leafy Greens
Carrots, carrot juice and leafy greens, such as kale and spinach, are top sources of beta-carotene -- a type of A vitamin that helps your body's ability to fend off harmful viruses and bacteria. A-vitamins also support healthy surface linings of your respiratory system, according to the Office of Dietary Supplements. And mild deficiencies of vitamin A can increase children's risk for respiratory infections.
Vitamin C-Rich Foods
Vitamin C is known for its potent antioxidant, or disease-fighting, properties. Although research findings are limited, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, vitamin C may help reduce wheezing and inflammation associated with asthma and improve overall respiration. Some of the richest sources of vitamin C include red and green bell peppers, citrus fruits and juices, kiwi, strawberries and Brussels sprouts. Moderate amounts are present in cabbage, cauliflower and baked potatoes.
Yogurt and Kefir
Yogurt and kefir are cultured dairy products that provide valuable amounts of protein that promotes immune function, calcium and probiotics -- beneficial or "friendly" bacteria. Probiotics may help prevent respiratory infections, according to UMMC. For best potential results, consume yogurt and kefir containing "live active" cultures, such as lactobacillus, on a routine basis. For antioxidant benefits, top yogurt with colorful fruit.
Warm Fluids
Warm fluids support hydration, which is important for flushing toxins from your body through urine. Chicken soup, broth and tea can also help ease throat pain and loosen mucus and helps reduce congestion related to colds. Additional valuable options include warm water and broth-based vegetable soups that provide antioxidants. Avoid caffeinated fluids, such as coffee, to prevent sleep interference, and thick, creamy soups that may thicken mucus.
