With so many different types of exercise equipment on the market, it's difficult to decide which to choose, especially when plenty of manufactures use enticing language such as "top of the line" or "best-rated." The best way to figure out which exercise equipment is right for you is to forget about all the bells and whistles and pay close attention to details such as quality, durability and the length of the warranty.

Treadmill

Treadmills may come with exciting features such as built-in speakers or state-of-the-art graphics. However, it is more important to take note of a treadmill's motor, flywheel, frame, rollers, deck and belt. Look for a treadmill that offers speeds of at least 2 horsepower. Anything less may lead to frequent motor meltdowns and repairs. Also, consider how you plan to use your treadmill. If you plan to use it mostly for running, then select a treadmill that features excellent shock absorbers as well as a wide belt. Trainer Secrets suggests to aim for a belt that is 18-inches wide by 55-inches long.

Elliptical

Although price is a feature to consider, other important features to consider include stride length, resistance options, built-in programs and display console. Choose an elliptical machine that provides longer stride lengths. This will help save your knees as shorter stride lengths may feel jarring or choppy. Also, choose an elliptical machine that feature magnetic resistance. Some models may feature belt tension. Although belt resistance is cheaper, belt tension models tend to wear out much quicker than magnetic models. Built-in workouts help keep boredom at bay plus provide plenty of different workout options.

Stair Stepper

There are two forms of stair stepper machines: hydraulic and belt. Hydraulic stair stepper machines contain two separate steps that move in opposition to each other whereas a belt stair stepper machine resembles a rotating set of stairs. If you prefer the hydraulic model, choose one that features a step height of 8 inches. This is the average height of a regular stair step. If you prefer belt models, look into the speed of the belt. Some machines may feature 24 steps per minute while others may feature 30 steps or more. Choose a machine that best matches your current fitness ability at its lowest speed plus offers room to improve.

Weight Machines

Plenty of people may have their own opinions when it comes to free weights versus weight machines. Free weights provide life-like lifting situations and utilize the entire body. Free weights are also cheaper than weight machines. Weight machines provide guided movements as well as a full range of motions. Look for weight machines that provide long warranties. Products with short warranties tend to feature more breakdowns and repairs. Choose whichever best suits your preferences and lifestyle. Regardless of which one you choose, use proper form when lifting weights.
