Combining the need for being physically fit with the childlike interest in a ball produced an ergonomic exercise tool: the exercise ball. Exercise balls are designed to provide you with assistance in performing exercises for your core muscles, including your abdominal, pelvic and back muscles. Most exercise balls are primarily categorized according to height and offer a general guideline for weight capacity.
Exercise Ball Sizes and Height
Exercise balls are available in a variety of sizes, measured in centimeters. For example, if you are 5 feet or shorter, a ball that is 45 cm is the best choice. If you are between 5 feet, 1 inch and 5 feet, 8 inches, a 55 cm ball is the appropriate size. A 65-cm ball is the best size if you are between 5 feet, 9 inches and 6 feet, 2 inches tall. Choose a ball that is 75 cm in diameter if you are between 6 feet, 3 inches and 6 feet, 7 inches tall. A ball that is 85 cm is the best choice if you are 6 feet, 8 inches and taller.
Finding the Right Size
If you haven't used an exercise ball before, there is another way to test it outside of following the height recommendations. If you want to test the size of the exercise ball, sit on the ball as if you are sitting in a chair. A ball that is the appropriate size supports your bottom and allows you to sit with your feet on the floor and your knees at a 90-degree angle.
Standard Weight Capacity
Many commercially available exercise balls have a standard capacity of 250 lbs. However, some sports equipment manufacturers offer varieties of exercise balls with 2,500 lbs. of static capacity. Static capacity refers to weight applied to the ball that involves minimal movement.
Safe Exercise Ball Use
In addition to choosing the correct size exercise ball, you should also be aware of the proper conditions for use. For example, use an exercise ball on a flat surface that is free from obstructions. Ensure that the ball is inflated completely before using.
