If you are a "meat and potatoes" person, steak and potatoes is a prime meal. You can find this on practically any steakhouse menu or you can make it at home. If you're low on time, you can cook the steak and potatoes together in the oven with some variations in their preparation.

Choosing Steak

With so many varieties of steak, it can be difficult to choose the one that is right for you. You may believe that more expensive varieties are the best choice; however, that is not necessarily true. T-bone, porterhouse, New York strip and rib eye steaks are all cost-effective yet tasty choices.

Steak and Baked Potatoes

Cooking steak and potatoes together doesn't necessarily equate to cooking them literally in the same pan. For example, you can place russet or baking potatoes in a 400 degree F. oven and cook for 40 minutes. Place seasoned steak on a baking sheet and cook for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Remove the steak and the potatoes when they are tender.

Steak and Scalloped Potatoes

Scalloped potatoes have a cheesy, creamy texture and are a nice accompaniment to steak. To cook scalloped potatoes and steak together in the oven, prepare the potatoes according to the recipe and place in a 375 degree F. oven. Cook for 35 minutes and place seasoned steak on a baking sheet in the oven. Cook the steak for 10 minutes and remove the potatoes. Increase the temperature to 400 degrees F. and cook the steak for an additional 10 minutes.

Steak and Oven Fries

If you want an alternative to hamburger and fries, make steak and oven fries instead. Peel and slice russet potatoes into fries and season with salt, pepper and garlic with a drizzle of olive oil. Spread the fries on a baking sheet and cook at 425 degrees F. for 25 minutes. Place seasoned steak in the oven and cook for 10 to 15 minutes to desired doneness.
