Androgenic alopecia is an inherited form of pattern hair loss. Although people associate androgenic alopecia with men, it also affects women. Androgenic alopecia causes hair thinning and complete hair loss at the top of the head resulting in a horseshoe shaped hair growth pattern along the sides and back of the head. When this form of alopecia is seen in women, it causes a gradual thinning of hair on the top of the head. If your alopecia is caused by malnutrition, you may be able to slow down the process of hair loss.
Thiamine
Thiamine, vitamin B-1 is one of the eight vitamins belonging to the B-complex vitamin group. This vitamin is needed for healthy hair and skin. The scalps health and hair health can determine how much hair you will lose and the rate at which you will lose it. The healthier your hair and scalp is the less likely you are to rapidly lose hair. Men are required to take 1.2 mg of vitamin B-1 and women are required to take 1.1 mg per day through dietary means. Thiamine is found in pork, soy milk, watermelon and acorn squash. You can also take vitamin B-1 as a supplement or included in a complete multivitamin.
Riboflavin
Riboflavin, or vitamin B-2, is used to maintain the health of the hair, skin, muscles and brain. Riboflavin belongs to the B-complex group and is found in dairy products, enriched grains and enriched cereals. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, most Americans get enough of this vitamin. Being deficient in this vitamin may cause hair thinning. Men are required to consume 1.2 mg and women are recommended to consume 11 mg of vitamin B-2 daily.
Biotin
Biotin is needed for healthy hair. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, trace minerals and biotin promote hair growth. However, there is no evidence to suggest that biotin can help restore your hair growth if you are already getting enough biotin in your diet. If you are not, UMMC says 300 micrograms of biotin daily may boost hair growth. Consult a doctor for specific guidelines on dosage.

Since vitamin deficiencies can exaggerate and cause hair loss, get an adequate amount through taking a daily multivitamin. Complete multivitamins contain a mixture of essential minerals and vitamins needed to sustain proper health and functioning of the entire body. Multivitamins come in powder, liquid or chewable form.
