Succulent, juicy ahi tuna is a favorite in sushi rolls and for sashimi. If you aren't a sushi chef, no problem. You can bring the flavors from your favorite sushi restaurant home by grilling the tuna and placing it and toppings in a sandwich. For example, grilled ahi tuna topped with wasabi, tomatoes, arugula and garlic aioli makes a savory lunch reminiscent of Japanese cuisine. You can select the toppings that mirror your favorite sushi rolls, or go with the traditional lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise.

Step 1

Place the ahi tuna in a bowl, and cover it with the marinade. Turn the tuna fillets to coat them. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap, and place the tuna in the refrigerator to marinate overnight.

Step 2

Preheat the grill to medium-high, or 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Brush the grates with olive oil to prevent the tuna from sticking.

Step 3

Toast the bread and then assemble the vegetables and other toppings on it while the grill is preheating. Start with the wasabi, aioli or other sauce and then add the vegetables and mushrooms if you are using them.

Step 4

Place the tuna on the grill, and cook over direct heat for two to three minutes per side for rare tuna, or four minutes per side for medium tuna.

Step 5

Transfer the tuna to a plate with your grill spatula, and place the grilled tuna immediately on the sandwiches. Serve hot.

Tips and Warnings

  • You have many options for marinade, but Asian flavors complement ahi tuna the best. Marinate with a prepared marinade or create your own with olive oil and soy sauce. Ahi tuna is not usually prepared past medium.
