Matt Gregory Kuchar is a professional golfer who first won on the PGA Tour in 2002 in the Honda Classic. He failed to earn enough money to qualify for the 2006 PGA Tour but joined the Nationwide Tour in 2006, winning the Henrico County Open and finishing 10th on the money list, and was able to earn his PGA Tour card for 2007. Kuchar is ranked No. 10 in the Official World Golf Rankings and has played five tournaments in 2011, as of May, and finished in the top 10 in four of them.
Personal Life
Kuchar was born on June 21, 1978 in Winter Park, Florida. He was a graduate of Georgia Tech, earning a degree in management in 2000. He is married to Sybi Kuchar and has two sons, Cameron Cole, born in 2007, and Carson Wright, born in 2009. He stands 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 195 lbs. He turned professional golfer in 2000. He currently resides in St. Simons Island in Georgia. He was a two-time first-team All-American on the golf team at Georgia Tech. Future PGA Tour professional player Bryce Molder was one of his teammates.
Start in Golf
Kuchar got hooked on golf at age 12 when his mother, Meg, upgraded their membership to the country club to include golf. Matt and his dad, Peter, who once was ranked the No. 1 tennis player in doubles in Florida, also enjoyed playing golf. In 1997, Kuchar won the U.S. Amateur and was the U.S. top collegiate golfer in 1998, receiving the Fred Haskins award. Besides golf, Matt and Sybi also play tennis and have won a consolation title in the USTA National Husband/Wife Doubles Championship in Florida in October 2009.
Career Highlights
Matt has won three times on the PGA Tour: the Honda Classic in 2002, the Turning Stone Resort Championship in 2009 and The Barclays in 2010. His record as of April 2011 is 37 top 10 finishes and 71 top 25 finishes. 2010 was considered a banner year for Kuchar, as he finished first in scoring average (69.61), finished first in all-around ranking, first in total money won (Arnold Palmer Award) and had the most top 10 finishes.
Giving Back to the Community
Matt and Sybi Kuchar are involved in many charities. They support Camp Twin Lakes, a network of camps providing programs for kids in Georgia who have serious illnesses and disabilities. They also are involved in the Ronald McDonald House Charities, providing temporary homes for families that want to stay close to their hospitalized child. The temporary homes charge little or can be provided at no cost.
