Pelvic inflammatory disease, or PID, is a bacterial infection of the female reproductive organs, such as the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes. The disease is transmitted through sexual contact and is associated with other sexually transmitted diseases, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea. If left untreated, PID can cause sterility and may even be life-threatening. A doctor may prescribe hospital care and a course of antibiotics to treat the disease. Olive leaf extract has antibacterial and antifungal properties and may work as a complementary therapy to traditional care, according to The University of Maryland Medical Center.
Step 1
Consult your physician before taking olive leaf extract to treat your PID. Tell her of your plan to supplement treatment with the extract in case there are any possible drug interactions. There are no reported side effects of olive leaf extract, but few human studies are available.
Step 2
Begin with 250 mg of standardized olive leaf extract up to three times per day in addition to your doctor-prescribed medication. Take the supplement with meals and be aware of any possible side effects or drug interactions.
Step 3
Follow up with your physician within 72 hours of starting treatment, or as your doctor directs. Advise your doctor of your progress and any complications. Consult with him about increasing your dosage of olive leaf extract.
Step 4
Increase to 500 mg of standardized extract up to three times per day, with doctor approval. Take the supplement for the duration of your doctor-prescribed treatment. If you experience any side effects or complications, stop immediately and consult your physician.
