Though some running enthusiasts argue that running on a treadmill is not "real running," there are some advantages to hitting the treadmill instead of the pavement. The moving belt means that you don't have to work as hard as you would when running outside. Use the treadmill to challenge yourself, though, and you'll get many of the same benefits as outdoor running, but without the common pitfalls.
All-Weather Training
If you live in an area that has cold winters, hot summers or a lot of rain, you may find a treadmill appealing. The treadmill allows you to work out indoors in a comfortable environment. This especially benefits people who must adhere to a strict workout schedule and who may not be able to reschedule a workout due to inclement weather.
Predictable
When you get on your treadmill, you know what to expect. You don't have to worry about getting lost, stopping for traffic lights or watching out for cars and pedestrians. You simply get on the machine and go.
Multitasking
Running on a treadmill allows you to catch up on your favorite TV shows or watch a movie while you're getting exercise. Some people can even read a book or magazine while running on a treadmill.
Safety
The treadmill belt is an even, flat surface, which means that you're less likely to fall as you might when jogging outside where there are rocks, tree roots and other dangers. Additionally, the belt absorbs some of the shock when you jog, making it a bit easier on the knees than running on pavement.
Tracking Abilities
On the treadmill, you can see how far you're going and how fast you're running. Many machines will also measure your heartbeat to make sure that you are working out at a challenging speed, and will also measure the approximate amount of calories that you burn during a workout. You may find these elements motivating.
Challenging Settings
On most treadmills, you can not only adjust the speed, but also the incline at which you are running. This allows you to easily do an incline training workout without having to rely on finding hills. It's particularly helpful if you live in an area with flat terrain.
