Extra pounds leave many teens feeling self-conscious and can lead to health problems later in life. Healthy weight loss requires a combination of healthy eating and exercise for a balanced approach. Unrealistic expectations of how your body should look get in the way of healthy weight loss. Keep health your priority to decrease the numbers on the scale and increase your confidence.

Seek Support

Whether you turn to your family or your friends, a support system might help you stay on track with your weight loss. Your family can support you by making healthier choices themselves, even if they aren't actively trying to lose weight. A friend with similar weight loss goals is also an option. Exercise together, share healthy tips and generally support one another as you lose weight. Avoid turning the weight loss into a competition, which can lead to unhealthy weight loss strategies.

Find Enjoyable Exercise

Exercise is a key element in weight loss, but that doesn't mean you have to spend hours at the gym or play a starring role on the school basketball team. Exercise comes in many forms so explore the options in your area. School sports teams are an option for some teens. Others might prefer a recreational sports team in the community or individual sports. Many communities have various races for charities or community events. Training for a race gives you regular exercise.

Learn to Cook

The cooking method used to prepare meals influences the nutritional value of the finished product. Learning to cook in healthy ways provides you with a lifelong skill for continued weight loss and weight maintenance. Grilling, baking, sauteing, stir-frying, steaming and poaching are healthy ways to cook foods. Try new recipes for your family, especially if you want them to join in on a healthier lifestyle.

Avoid a Diet Mentality

Instead of using the word "diet", think of your healthier choices as new, lifelong habits to improve your overall health. While you should cut back on unhealthy foods, completely depriving yourself of your favorite foods might backfire, causing you to overeat. If you do overindulge, give yourself a break. Instead of dwelling on it, get right back on track. Make one healthy choice to help refocus your weight-loss efforts.

Deal With Stress

The teen years often include stressful situations, from getting passing grades to dealing with friendship problems. Stress sometimes makes people reach for unhealthy snacks and can cause you to pack on fat in the abdominal area. While you can't avoid stress completely, you can learn to deal with the stress in healthy ways. Relaxation techniques, exercise and talking with friends are a few ways to manage your stress. A full night's sleep might also help you deal with your stress.
