Tips to Get Motivated to Exercise

You know you need to exercise, but finding the motivation to get moving is sometimes a challenge. On days when exercise is the last thing you want to do, an extra dose of motivation helps you take the first steps. Analyzing your exercise style allows you to choose physical activities and the best time of day to aid in your exercise motivation.

Create a Playlist

Music offers a motivator when it comes to your overall mood and attitude toward exercise. Create a playlist of songs that make you want to move. Songs with a steady, fast beat often work well for exercise motivation. These songs help you move at a steady pace, whether you are running, lifting weights or using the elliptical machine. If you can't get yourself out the door to begin exercising, start listening to your exercise soundtrack. The tunes might give you the energizing boost you need to start exercising.

Share Your Goals

Exercise goals give you something to work toward and might offer you motivation to work out, especially if the goals you set are attainable. Go one step further by sharing your goals with others. If your friends and family know about your exercise goals, you might be more inclined to stay on track and reach them. An exercise partner, either in person or a virtual partner, is one way to share your goals. Your exercise buddy can help you stay on track and remind you of your goals on days when you would rather hang out on the couch than go for a jog.

Work Toward Something

If the general health benefits of exercise aren't enough to motivate you, give yourself something more to work toward. An athletic event, such as a race or triathlon, is an example of an event that might motivate you to work out. Training for an event means you'll need a workout plan to ensure you are prepared physically and mentally. The training plan gets you into a set schedule, possibly giving you more motivation to get moving.

Go to Bed Early

You need to get enough sleep at night to feel rested and more energetic. When you feel rested, you are more likely to have the energy and motivation to exercise. If you feel yourself lacking in energy, try going to bed an hour earlier or take a short nap.

Give It 10 Minutes

In many cases, getting started with your workout is the most challenging part. If you can get yourself out the door, you might feel motivated enough to continue with your exercise. Tell yourself that you only need to exercise for 10 minutes. After the first 10 minutes pass, you are usually in the groove of your workout and continue.
