Calculating your Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple way of measuring your weight class category. Different possible BMI results are divided into number ranges; the range your BMI falls under determines the weight class to which you belong. For example, an adult with a BMI over 30 is considered obese, while one with a BMI below 18.5 is underweight. Determining your own personal BMI number is as simple as plugging your height and weight into a short equation.

Step 1

Weigh yourself on the scale. Using a calculator, multiply your weight in pounds by 703.

Step 2

Measure your height in inches using a tape measure. Divide the result of your first equation by this number.

Step 3

Divide that answer by your height again.

Step 4

Find your BMI on the BMI chart. A BMI below 18.5 is underweight. Between 18.5 and 24.9 is a healthy weight. Between 25 and 29.9 is overweight. Between 30 and 39.9 is obese, and above 40 is morbidly obese.
