According to MayoClinic.com, there is no weight-loss plan that will work for everyone, and lifestyle factors as well as personal preference are essential ingredients to consider when choosing the right diet plan for you. Different diet plans also have different average results, according to MayoClinic.com, and many fad diets or diets where you lose a large amount of weight too fast can be potentially harmful to your health.

Step 1

Visit your doctor to determine what weight loss program is best for your current overall health. According to Health.com, visiting a doctor before starting a diet program is essential, because some diets and exercise plans may have negative effects if you have certain conditions, diseases or are taking certain types of medication. Your doctor may also have advice about what program will help you lose weight the healthiest way possible.

Step 2

Consider your lifestyle factors. According to USA Today, behavioral changes may be in order before taking on a diet plan, or at least considered, before choosing the right diet for you. Occasional moderate alcohol consumption, for example, may not be allowed on certain diets.

Step 3

Think about what foods you don't want to give up before choosing a diet plan. While you may need to limit certain high-fat foods, it doesn't mean that you can never eat them. If you like pasta, for example, a low-carbohydrate diet probably isn't right for you, but the Mediterranean diet, which allows whole grains, may be a good fit, according to USA Today. There is no reason to punish yourself when you're trying to lose weight.

Step 4

Decide whether or not you have time to commit to cooking fresh, healthy meals for yourself on a regular basis or not. For many people who are too busy to cook or simply don't enjoy cooking, diet programs that use prepared or frozen foods for weight loss are a good choice. These types of programs do sometimes come with extra costs in the form of buying prepared food, however, so consider pricing the plan out before committing to it.

Tips and Warnings

  • Regular exercise is an essential part of healthy weight loss. It is important that you find an exercise program that will help you achieve your weight loss goals and that matches your current lifestyle and physical fitness level. Before starting any exercise plan, talk with your doctor. Basic tests may be necessary to determine what exercise regimen is best, especially if you have any underlying medical conditions.
