Exercise bikes are popular fitness equipment, both at home and in the gym. According to Consumer Reports, an increasing number of people are looking at options that enable them to work out at home. Choosing the right fitness equipment depends on personal preference, budget considerations, and health conditions and requirements. Exercise bikes offer a good aerobic workout and can strengthen your lower body while aiding weight loss. When you select an exercise bike, keep in mind key aspects including style, programs, safety features, comfort and ease of use.

Upright or Recumbent

Step 1

Begin by choosing between an upright exercise bike and a recumbent one. An upright exercise bike is similar to a standard bicycle, with the seat above the pedals. A recumbent bike typically has a larger bucket seat with back support. Both types of exercise bikes provide adequate support to the joints and enable you to burn calories without excess strain.

Step 2

Consider a recumbent exercise bike if you have problems with your knees or back. A recumbent bike is a better choice ergonomically, because the bucket seat offers more support. Older people find it easier to climb on and off recumbent exercise bikes.

Step 3

Choose an upright exercise bike if you want a more intense workout. You can extend your hips more when you work on an upright exercise bike. This may help you work better on your lower body. You can also lift your upper body from the seat and pedal stronger to get a more intense workout.

Features

Step 1

Decide on a budget range. Exercise bikes can cost anywhere from $100 to over $2,000. You can get more features and a more durable machine if you spend more money. Cheaper bikes may not have as many features and may also have a lower weight capacity. Consider your fitness level, the intended amount of usage for the machine and the number of users before making a decision.

Step 2

Look for features such as a clear display, adjustable seat and handles, and a water bottle holder. The display must show the calories burned, speed, distance, time, heart rate and resistance level. An exercise bike that offers different workout options and varying degrees of resistance will be more beneficial. If you are willing to spend more, you can select a bike that offers entertainment options such as video games.

Step 3

Select a machine that includes a heart rate monitor, or buy a stand-alone monitor that you can use when you work out. This feature lets you check your heart rate from time to time, and to ensure that your heart rate is not too high. Test out different styles of exercise bikes for a couple of minutes before making a final selection.
