Bicycle Odometer Instructions

A bicycle odometer measures how far you have ridden as one of the functions of a speedometer, which serves to display how fast the front wheel is turning in terms of mph or kilometers per hour. A speedometer employs a magnet on the front wheel and a sensor on the fork. The sensor counts how many times the magnet passes it during riding and records the data, and then the speedometer's computer unit converts that number into speed and distance, and displays the results on the screen. Tracking miles or kilometers ridden on a bicycle can help you reach your workout goal and monitor your fitness progress over time.

Step 1

Remove the battery cover on the speedometer's computer unit and insert a new battery. The speedometer, which includes odometer and trip-distance functions, will turn on automatically after it is installed and you begin cycling.

Step 2

Position the magnet on one of the spokes on the front wheel of the bicycle so it is facing the outside of the wheel on the right. Clamp it into place.

Step 3

Attach the mounting clamp or cables to the right fork leg on the front wheel. Make sure the magnet passes the sensor correctly before fully securing the clamp or cables.

Step 4

Place the speedometer computer unit on the handlebar with the mounting shoe, bracket or clamp included with the unit. Fasten it securely so it will not fall off during cycling.

Step 5

Install the wiring for the speedometer as directed by the manufacturer, if applicable. Proceed to the next step if you have a wireless unit.

Step 6

Reset the odometer reading to zero before you begin cycling by pressing and holding the display button, according to the product manufacturer's instructions. Ride the bicycle as you normally would. The speedometer will automatically begin measuring speed and distance once you start riding. Press the proper button on the speedometer to bring up the odometer or trip-distance display, to see how far you have traveled overall or only during the current trip.

Tips and Warnings

  • Display the speedometer's functions, including the odometer, by following the manufacturer's instructions.
