Colon cleanses are promoted for beginning a weight loss program as a way to remove toxins, fecal matter, undigested foods and bacteria from the intestinal tract. In addition to weight loss, colon cleansing helps alleviate fatigue, insomnia, poor concentration and memory loss. Dozens of colon cleanse products are available over-the-counter; others can be concocted using ingredients found at home. Colonic irrigation, also known as hydrotherapy and performed by a naturopath practitioner, is an option that involves pumping liquids through the rectum into the colon.

Colon Cleansing at Home

Step 1

Research the different over-the-counter product options available for home use, or ask a naturopathic practitioner for recommendations on treatment. Alternatively, check out the ingredients necessary for homemade treatments. Colon cleanse products and practitioners are not regulated by the federal government.

Step 2

Speak with a doctor or nurse practitioner before beginning any home-based treatment. Make sure you are healthy enough to do it, particularly if you have experienced any heart or kidney problems.

Step 3

Plan ahead. Some products are used over a period of time, while others are administered over the course of a day or two. For one-day cleanses, clear your schedule and make sure you have access to a bathroom.

Step 4

Follow all instructions that come with the over-the-counter cleanse product. Follow recipes for at-home cleanses exactly as instructed. Deviating from recipe or product instructions may not be beneficial for weight loss.

Step 5

Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

Colonic Irrigation

Step 1

Consult with your doctor before undertaking a colonic irrigation. Colonic irrigation is not for everybody: Individuals with ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, Crohn's disease, severe hemorrhoids and rectal or colon tumors should avoid colon irrigation cleanses.

Step 2

Choose a therapist who is licensed by your state or who is a member of a recognized national organization. Meet with the cleansing practitioner before treatment; ask what to expect and make sure disposable equipment is used.

Step 3

Follow a healthy lifestyle after treatment. Exercise regularly and eat healthy. Individuals who are sedentary should have follow-up treatments every three to six months, but active adults can go longer between treatments.
