Green tea is unfermented tea containing a high amount of antioxidants. The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that green tea extract burns fat by increasing your metabolism. A study in Tokyo found that within a group of Japanese men on the same diet, those who lost more weight and body fat mass had consumed 690 mg of catechins, green tea antioxidants, daily for three months, as reported in the January 2005 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Green tea extract is a concentrated form of the tea in which its antioxidants have been isolated and packaged in liquid, capsule or tablet form.
Step 1
Consult your doctor before taking green tea extract. There are contraindications if you are on certain medications or if you have anxiety, heart and kidney problems or stomach ulcers.
Step 2
Select a standardized form of green tea extract that offers at least 90 percent polyphenols and 55 percent EGCG. The product label will say something similar to "Green Tea Extract standardized 98% polyphenols, 80% catechins, 55% EGCG (leaves)."
Step 3
Buy 500-mg capsules or another size that allows you to bring your total daily intake of green tea extract to 1,500 mg. Divide the dosage evenly throughout the day. For instance, take one 500-mg capsule three times daily. Follow additional instructions on the label if they exist, such as taking it with meals or on an empty stomach.
