Hip-hop dance, a type of dance inspired by hip-hop culture, is a high-energy, fast moving and rhythmic dance that requires a significant amount of physical, cardiovascular and muscular endurance. Typically performed in freestyle fashion, hip-hop dance incorporates movements such as locking, breaking and popping, which involve isometric, plyometric, isotonic and aerobic ability.

Calories Burned

In a 60-minute session of hip-hop dance, a 135-lb. individual can burn around 419 calories, explains Fatburn.com. In the same amount of time, a 150-lb. hip-hop dancer can dance off 465 calories.

Factors that Vary Results

The amount of calories you burn during a session of hip-hop dancing will vary depending on a number of factors such as height, weight, gender, length of activity and level of intensity. The longer you dance, the more you jump or squat and the faster you move all contribute to greater caloric burn.

Balancing Diet and Exercise

Being active is an important part of living well. Sometimes, however, the balancing act of good nutrition and exercise can be a difficult task. If you are an avid hip-hop dancer and practice one to several hours a day, it is important that you eat enough calories to replace energy you use up each day. Eating plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains like whole-wheat bagels and brown rice, and snacking on high protein foods such as nuts and cheese can provide sufficient energy and nutrition to fuel your body throughout the day.

Health Benefits

Medline Plus explains that your health can benefit in a number ways from aerobic exercises such as hip-hop dance. Consistent exercise can help you lose weight, improve your heart and lung health and strengthen and build muscles and flexibility. It can also help reduce your risk of some cancers, osteoporosis, depression, obesity, high blood pressure, heart attacks, anxiety and stroke.
