With childhood obesity on the rise, it is all the more important that teenagers be getting regular exercise. But when kids get too old to play backyard games with one another, the opportunities for exercise can be reduced. Fortunately school sports take on an increased presence as children grow up, presenting more opportunities for exercise. But teenagers have more options outside of school to get the exercise they need.

Team Sports

Most children have the luxury of attending middle and high schools where team sports are offered. These sports often run seasonally while offering off-season workout programs to help teens stay in-shape year round. The benefits of this form of exercise often go well beyond physical fitness: The players are able to socialize with one another and develop work ethic skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

Social Activities

Even activities that are primarily social can be used as exercise for teenagers. Going on walks with friends can help get valuable daily exercise, as can bike rides and hikes. Visiting the local swimming pool in the summer can also help teens burn calories while having fun.

Dancing

Whether it is the homecoming dance or the concert of a favorite band, dancing is exercise that doesn't feel like it. But many teens get excited by the music and are active on the floor, whether they are dancing formally or just simply bouncing in place. Dancing opportunities often aren't regular for most teenagers, but they can help burn calories and elevate the heart rate.

Video Games

On the one hand, video games are an increasing reason why children are less active today than in generations past. But video games are turning away from their sedentary ancestors and getting their users more involved -- literally. Video games like "Guitar Hero" and "Dance Dance Revolution" get teens on their feet and moving. In the case of "DDR," teens only get more active and involved as they become more skilled at the game, and this can give them valuable exercise even on a rainy day.
