Asthma is a medical condition that causes the airways to narrow and produce extra mucus. The main symptom of asthma is difficulty breathing, a condition that can include wheezing and coughing. Caffeine may provide temporary benefits for asthma sufferers, but it is important to talk to your doctor before attempting any type of home remedy to treat this serious condition.

Bronchodilators

Bronchodilators are medications that help provide quick relief during an allergy attack. Common medications that work as inhalants include ipratropium, albuterol, pirubuterol and levalbuterol. Some intravenous and oral drugs, such as prednisone and methylprednisolone, also work quickly to reduce the inflammation and constriction within the airways. Caffeine may produce an effect similar to bronchodilator medications.

Caffeine

Caffeine acts as a diuretic and nervous system stimulant. This substance occurs naturally in many food sources including cocoa beans, tea leaves and coffee. Certain medications, such as pain relievers and appetite suppressants, contain added amounts of caffeine. Moderate caffeine intake of approximately 250 mg is safe for most individuals. This consists of about three 8 oz. cups of regular coffee per day.

Effects

According to the University of London's Community Health Sciences, caffeine may improve airway function in people with asthma. The mild to modest results of drinking caffeinated coffee may last up to four hours at a time. Indiana University confirms caffeine's ability to help reduce the symptoms of exercise-induced asthma.

Precautions

MayoClinic.com warns asthma sufferers to avoid relying on quick-relief medications. Although fast-acting bronchodilators can help provide immediate relief, long-term asthma medications can help control and prevent asthma attacks. Discuss caffeine treatment and other forms of alternative treatments with your doctor. Caffeine can interact with some medications and may cause uncomfortable symptoms, especially when you consume more than moderate amounts. Common side effects from caffeine consumption include nausea, vomiting, depression and anxiety. Caffeine may also cause an increase in urination and make sleeping difficult.
