Like many other comprehensive diet plans, the Nutrisystem plan works not only to change your diet while you lose weight but to change your eating habits for life. The goal of Nutrisystem is to help you change your entire way of thinking about food so you can successfully transition into a maintenance plan once you have reached your goal weight. To this end, Nutrisystem offers the Flex Transition Program, which is designed to help you stay on track.

How Nutrisystem Works

Nutrisystem works with the glycemic index, which is a ranking scale of how quickly the carbohydrates from certain foods are metabolized. High glycemic index foods metabolize quickly, causing a rush of glucose to enter your bloodstream. After this glucose spike, your body experiences a crash, which may leave you feeling hungry or sleepy. Nutrisystem helps you choose small portions of low glycemic index foods that are also low in fat so you feel full all day and maintain a consistent energy level.

Nutrisystem Flex Transition Program

The experts at Nutrisystem encourage you to stay on the plan after you have reached your goal weight. Instead of the Nutrisystem Basic plan, however, you will transition to the Nutrisystem Flex Transition Program. This program is similar to the Basic plan because you will still select specific Nutrisystem foods, but for fewer meals; therefore, much of the portioning and decision-making about the appropriateness of the foods is still handled by Nutrisystem rather than leaving you entirely on your own to make healthy decisions.

Flex Transition Meal Plans

The Flex Transition Program allows you to select a plan that you are comfortable with, either transitioning you to making dinner on your own or making breakfast and dinner on your own. Either way, you will still receive your lunches and your snack or dessert items through Nutrisystem if you choose to go to the Flex Transition Program. Nutrisystem makes no mention of when, if ever, you should go off the plan entirely.

Continuing Support from Nutrisystem

When you opt to go on the Flex Transition Program, Nutrisystem provides you with an "At Home Tool Kit" that includes "The Low Glycemic Index Cookbook, Nutrisystem Edition," as well as the "Nutrisystem Meal Measure and Healthy Steps Portion Control Serving Set," which is a collection of kitchen utensils and a dinner plate that has small cups inset in it to help you determine the correct portion size for your meals. In addition, you will retain access to the Nutrisystem website and the nutrition counselors on the telephone.
