1. Get Out And Move
Senior citizens need to stay active and involved in daily exercise activities. Join a senior aerobic or swim class offered by the local community center or one of the senior division softball, bowling or basketball teams in a local league. If these aren't options that interest you, plan an activity schedule for yourself and some friends to go walking, biking or swimming at least a few times a week. Staying active is key to maintaining your overall health and fitness.
2. Exercise Your Mind
Staying involved in creative activities to keep your mind healthy is just as important as regular physical activity. Join a book club to read and discuss a new book every week. Learn a new craft like knitting or scrapbooking. Enroll in classes at a local college to learn about poetry, history, creative writing or any area of study that interests you. It's never too late to go back to school, and keeping your mind sharp can help prevent the onset of memory loss and diseases like Alzheimer's.
3. Take Your Vitamins
Multivitamins play an important role in senior health. In addition to providing basic daily vitamins, senior multivitamins contain higher levels of calcium and vitamin D to prevent osteoporosis, lutein to preserve vision and memory, and other vitamins and minerals to promote health in people over the age of fifty. Talk to your doctor before taking a multivitamin to make sure it won't interfere with other prescription medications.
4. Play With The Kids
Stay active and involved with your family to help keep yourself healthy. Playing with the grandkids or participating in the family routines that your children have established with their families is a great way to find new activities to participate in, stay in touch with people you love, and stay active at the same time. Plan walks in the park on the weekends, take the grandkids to their softball practice, or just schedule regular visits for dinner. If you surround yourself with young ones like your grandkids and people you love, you'll feel young again too.
5. Visit The Doctor Regularly
As you grow older, you may be dealing with more health issues and conditions than you did in your youth. It's important to maintain regular checkups with your primary physician so they can help you manage your conditions and the medications you are taking to treat them. Don't skip doctor's appointments, especially if you're having a physical problem or an issue with one of your medications. If you do have to cancel an appointment make another one right away. Your doctor can work with you to help you stay happy and healthy in your senior years.
