5 Things You Need to Know About Essiac-Flor-Essence

1. Canada's

Canadian nurse, Rene Caisse, found what some tout as the ultimate cancer cure. Essiac, the herbal supplement that is Caisse spelled backwards, is a natural remedy that Caisse learned about from a woman who survived breast cancer. The woman told Caisse about an old Indian medicine man who gave her herbs for tea that she would drink every day. Caisse also heard tales of others who lived through cancer by drinking this special tea, so she gave some to her aunt, who was suffering from stomach cancer. Her doctors gave her six months to live, but after drinking the Essiac tea, her six months turned into 21 years. Caisse opened a clinic in the 1920s, and successfully treated many cancer patients with her Essiac blend.

2. Four Herbs Make up Essiac

There are four main herbs in Essiac: burdock root, slippery elm inner bark, sheep sorrel and Indian rhubarb root. Burdock root aids the digestive system and the reduction of mucus. It also supports a healthy immune system. Slippery elm inner bark helps the body dissolve mucus deposits your tissues, nerve channels and glands. This herb is full of calcium, magnesium and vitamins A, B, C and K. Sheep sorrel is a traditional folk medicinal herb, which may help reduce body temperature and promote detoxification through sweating and the kidneys. Indian rhubarb root is an herb that is a gentle laxative and promotes the release of toxins from the liver. People also use Indian rhubarb root to neutralize stomach acid and to oxygenate the body, which promotes a good balance in the digestive system.

3. The Immune System in Theory

Rene Caisse had a theory that by creating synergy in our immune systems, the body would be able to work in full capacity. She believed dangerous viruses, parasites, abnormal cells and chemical pollutants invade our bodies and throw our immune systems off balance. Her concoction of Essiac gives the immune system a boost that her studies show helps rid the body of many potentially dangerous invaders.

4. The Blend Known as Flor-Essence

Flor-Essence, which came on the market years after Essiac, is a blend of eight herbs and contains the same main herbs as Essiac: burdock root, slippery elm inner bark, sheep sorrel and Indian rhubarb root, plus watercress, blessed thistle, red clover and kelp. Flora claims Flor-Essence is a deep-cleansing, detoxifying tea.

5. Read the Disclaimer

The Essiac website indicates that no extensive clinical studies provide proof that Rene Caisse's formula cures or prevents any disease. The history and information on Caisse's patients are from documented sources. Since Essiac is a trademark, the company warns against conflicting information and products claiming to be Essiac or the equivalent. The FDA has approved neither Flor-Essence or Essiac as a cancer treatment.
