Kundalini Yoga developed in the eighth century as a spiritual practice to awaken the serpent energy, or kundalini, you have coiled at the base of your spine. Only if you activate this force can you grow into a spiritually aware being. Kundalini Yoga sessions incorporate meditation, chanting, breathing and postures to unleash the power of the serpent.

Self-Awareness

Kundalini yoga helps you to transcend the limitations of your physical body by making you aware of who you are as a spiritual being. This leads to the highest state of consciousness in which you realize, perhaps paradoxically, that you don't have an individual self and that, instead, you are one of the pieces that form the divine. You relinquish the "I" to become a part of the universe. In this new state, you are more compassionate toward yourself and others, and you're capable of settling into a state of stillness even -- and especially -- during difficult moments.

Physical Health

Although Kundalini Yoga involves a spiritual component, it also makes use of physical movements to help you reach your highest potential. According to the 3HO Foundation, a nonprofit that oversees the practice and teaching of Kundalini Yoga throughout the world, this modality regulates your glandular system and promotes a healthy nervous system.

Emotional Balance

When your spirit and body are in a state of harmony, your emotional self rakes in the benefits. As you practice Kundalini Yoga, the combination of poses, breathing techniques, chanting and meditation prepares you to face the challenges of the mundane life with a neutral to positive outlook. You notice situations without letting them hold you captive. If you're cut off in traffic, for instance, you might feel that the old urge to retaliate simply isn't there anymore.
