While some treadmills are intended primarily for use in the gym, many manufacturers produce models well suited to the home. These devices often have lighter frames than gym models and may come equipped with the ability to fold up for easier storage. The operating procedure remains consistent between both types of device; the treadmill's console unit controls the speed of the walking belt and the angle of the deck. Some models include preset programs designed to introduce variety to a workout without the need for constant user input.

Activation

Step 1

Clip the end of the safety key's lanyard onto your waistband. Step onto the rails located on each side of the walking deck.

Step 2

Insert the safety key into the corresponding slot or indentation on the treadmill's console; if the console does not activate automatically, press the button labeled "Power."

Step 3

Press the button on the console labeled "Start." Wait for the walking belt to begin to move, then step onto the belt and begin walking.

Manual Workout

Step 1

Locate the console buttons labeled "Speed." Use the buttons to increase or decrease the speed of the walking belt as desired.

Step 2

Examine the console and locate the buttons labeled "Incline." Use the buttons to adjust the angle of the deck to the desired setting.

Step 3

Continue running on the treadmill for as long as desired. Examine the console's LCD display to view information about your workout, such as the distance you have traveled and the number of calories you have burned.

Step 4

Use the "Incline" buttons to lower the treadmill's deck to the lowest setting. Use the "Speed" buttons to reduce the belt's speed to the lowest setting. Press the button labeled "Stop" and step onto the walking deck's side rails. Remove the safety key from the console.

Preset Workout

Step 1

Examine the console and locate the illustrations printed next to the preset workout buttons. Review the illustrations to determine the composition of each workout.

Step 2

Select a workout and press the button next to the corresponding illustration. Wait for the first segment of the workout to begin, then match your walking speed to that of the belt.

Step 3

Continue exercising until you hear a beep or the display starts flashing. Prepare for the treadmill's speed and incline settings to change as the next workout segment begins.

Step 4

Complete the workout program and step onto the side rails. Lower the deck to the ground, if necessary, and press the "Stop" button. Remove the safety key from the console.
