Many modern models of treadmill come equipped with an adjustable incline feature, which adds difficulty to a workout by raising the end of the walking deck up off of the ground. Some devices come with preprogrammed workouts that raise and lower the deck at regular intervals, which simulates the act of walking over hilly terrain. In most cases, the treadmill's console unit contains the controls for the machine's incline motor, which will allow you to adjust the angle of the deck by small increments.
Step 1
Turn on the treadmill's power switch, located at the front end of the base unit. Attach the treadmill's console key to your clothing. Mount the treadmill by stepping onto the rails installed on either side of the walking deck. Slide the key into the console; press the "Power" or "Start" button if the console does not activate automatically.
Step 2
Use the "Speed" buttons to set the walking belt to a slow speed. Hold onto the treadmill's handrails, then step onto the belt and begin walking. Remove your hands from the handrails, then continue walking for approximately five minutes to warm up.
Step 3
Use the "Incline" buttons to raise the end of the deck slightly. Walk at the current incline setting for two to three minutes, then increase the speed or angle of the deck to increase the workout difficulty, if desired.
Step 4
Continue walking for as long as desired, then set the angle of the deck to the lowest setting and reduce the speed of the walking belt. Walk on the belt for another five minutes to cool down, then grip the handrails and step onto the side rails.
Step 5
Press the "Stop" button and remove the key from the treadmill's console. Step off of the side rails and detach the console key from your clothing. Turn off the power switch.
Tips and Warnings
- The display on the treadmill's console will show the belt's speed and the current incline setting. Befofre beginning your workout, confirm that the treadmill is resting on a level surface, with 8 to 10 feet of open space behind the rear of the walking deck.
- Always wear shoes when walking on the treadmill; do not attempt to use the machine in socks or with bare feet. Avoid overexerting yourself; if you have difficulty completing your workout, use a lower speed or incline setting until your stamina improves. When configuring the treadmill's settings, make small adjustments; on some models, the walking belt is capable of reaching high speeds.
