1. Stop Bacteria in Its Tracks
Zithromax treats various infections caused by bacteria like ear infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, skin infections and sexually transmitted diseases. Its generic name is Azithromycin. As with other antibiotics, it's only effective if taken for the prescribed length of time. Make your doctor aware of any concerns or questions that you have before starting this medication.
2. Five Days Instead of Ten
Zithromax comes in the form of a tablet and as an oral suspension or liquid. You take the medication once a day regardless of its form. When it comes to children, this is definitely a benefit for Zithromax versus other antibiotics. It doesn't have to be taken with food and the length of use is between 1 to 5 days. Drink a full glass of water with each tablet. With the liquid form, shake the medicine thoroughly before use and accurately measure your dose using a syringe or measuring spoon. There is a single dose packet for the oral suspension. You pour the contents of the packet into two ounces of water and stir it up. Take immediately, refill the cup with some water and drink the extra amount to get any remaining medicine. Store tablets and liquids at room temperature and use as directed
3. Be Aware of Side Effects
Side effects vary and some are more serious than others. They include mild skin rashes, dizziness, headaches, vomiting, diarrhea and upset stomach or mild nausea. Contact your doctor immediately if you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest pain, irregular heartbeats, hives, swelling or jaundice. There is a possibility of other side effects, so talk to your doctor about anything unusual.
4. Mixing Medications
Zithromax interacts with other medications. Please speak to your doctor about any other medicines that you take, even over-the-counter ones. If you take antacids that contain aluminum and magnesium, leave at least a two-hour window before and after taking Zithromax. Mylanta, Maalox, Rolaids and Pepcid Complete fall into this category. Let your physician know if you are allergic to any medicines including other antibiotics.
5. To Wrap it All Up
If you miss a dose, take it when you remember, but not if it's time for the next dose. Follow instructions and don't take a double dose. No lying out in the sun or going to the tanning salon while on Zithromax. Your skin is more likely to sunburn due to extra sensitivity. Keep out of reach of children.
