1. Feeling Good Feels Great
To be an emotionally healthy person, you need to have healthy relationships with those close to you, be confident in yourself and have control over your feelings and actions. Just because you're in good emotional health doesn't mean that you don't have problems. It does mean, however, that you're able to work through those problems without blowing them out of proportion and that you know when to seek support from others.
2. Emotionally Unhealthy Isn't the Way to Be
The emotional consequences of not staying on top of your emotional health can include anger problems, stress, depression and anxiety. A whole slew of mental and physical symptoms come along with these conditions, such as feelings of rage, sadness, despair and emptiness, as well as headaches, nausea and fatigue. All of these issues can cause serious problems in your personal and professional life if left untreated.
3. Unhealthy Habits Make for an Unhealthy Mind
People often think that they can do whatever they want with their bodies, and that it will have no affect whatsoever on their emotional health. Not true. When you abuse your body by not eating properly, not exercising, not getting enough rest or by using drugs or alcohol, you're affecting your mind as well. To stay in top emotional shape, you need a functioning, healthy body, so eat your fruits and veggies, exercise regularly, get enough sleep every night and stop putting unhealthy substances into your body.
4. Express Yourself
Oftentimes, we allow our negative feelings to bottle up inside of us without letting them out. If you're upset about something, talk about it with a friend or family member. The process of venting your feelings and frustrations can be very therapeutic and can help you feel less stressed, angry or upset. If you're suffering from more severe emotional stress, you may want to seek the help of a counselor to get things off your chest and to get in a healthier mindset.
5. Out With the Bad, In With the Good
A big part of being emotionally healthy is making time to do things that you enjoy doing and making an effort to create the life that you want to lead. Take time to relax, read a book, go for a jog, go to the movies or spend time with your friends and loved ones. In addition to making time for yourself, begin making changes to rid your life of negativity. If you're in an unhealthy relationship, for example, your emotional health is surely suffering. Work to improve the relationship, or if it's an extremely unhealthy, abusive relationship, get out of it.
