A colon cleanse is the process of purging excess waste from the body through the digestive tract. Although not entirely supported by the medical community, many still utilize cleansing for weight loss and general health maintenance. Whole Foods

Whole grains along with fresh fruits and vegetables are an essential part of a healthy diet. Moreover, they are vital for proper digestion and elimination. Not only do they contain important vitamins and minerals, but they also are high in dietary fiber. Fiber provides bulk in the intestines and is used by the body to help excrete waste. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's new food pyramid, adults require at least 6 oz. of grains daily, half of which should be whole grains like oats, brown rice and whole-wheat bread. Additionally, you should eat 2 1/2 to 3 cups of fruit and 3 cups of fresh vegetables each day to meet your minimum daily requirements.

Water

It is no secret that water is important for proper health. Your blood is 90 percent water. It helps carry nutrients throughout your body. It also helps cleanse your body of excess waste. Exactly how much water you should drink each day has been the subject of some debate. However, experts at the Mayo Clinic recommend that women should drink at least 9 cups per day and that men should drink closer to 13 cups daily. This is more than the old standard of eight 8 oz. glasses per day, also known as the 8-by-8 rule. If you are following a cleansing diet plan, however, more water may be needed. Check with your health care provider for the amount that is right for you.

Supplements

Proper diet and water intake are the first basic steps in any colon cleansing plan. In addition, certain herbs may help further cleanse the colon. Cascara sagrada, whose name means sacred bark, is an herbal remedy used for occasional constipation. According to the Clayton College of Natural Health herb reference guide, Cascara sagrada helps stimulate secretions in the digestive tract, and is even considered safe for long-term use. Always consult your medical doctor before trying herbs or other natural supplements.

Precautions

While following a colon cleansing diet, eliminate fried foods and harmful stimulants such as alcohol and refined sugar as much as possible. Avoid purgatives such as senna or other over-the-counter laxatives to cleanse the colon. They may have harmful side effects such as gas, cramping and loose stool, and can also be habit forming. The basic formula for natural colon cleansing is simple: Consume whole foods, plenty of water and natural supplements as needed. Remember that complementary health practices such as colon cleansing are meant to be used in conjunction with -- not in place of -- conventional medical care.
