Comparison of Omron Pedometers

Omron, a large healthcare product manufacturer, makes several types of pedometers ranging in price from $23 to $60, as of May 2011. Some of the pricier models include extra features, such as the ability to calculate your distance walked. They also have an advanced sensor that can track your steps even when the pedometer is not attached to your waistband.

Acceleration Sensors

Omron pedometers have one of three types of acceleration sensor: single-axis, dual-axis, or tri-axis sensor. The acceleration mechanism senses your movement and tracks the number of steps you take. A single-axis sensor can only accurately count your steps if the pedometer display is horizontal to the ground. A dual-axis sensor can track your steps even if the pedometer is turned to the side or upside down, but not if it is slanted forward or back. A tri-axis sensor can track your steps in any position.

Pedometer Position

Omron pedometers with a dual or tri-axis sensor give you more options for how to carry the unit. With a single-axis sensor, you have to attach the pedometer to your waistband and make sure it does not turn to the side or slant forward or back. You can attach a dual-axis pedometer to your waistband, to the outside of your bag or purse or place it in a front shirt pocket. You have the most options with a tri-axis pedometer; hang it from your neck, put it in a pocket or bag or attach it to your pants.

Features

All Omron pedometers count the number of steps you walk. The more advanced models also track the distance walked in miles and the approximate calories burned. Some models have a memory feature that stores seven days of information. The pedometer automatically stores the day's information at midnight and resets the display to zero. After seven days, the oldest data is erased to make room for the current day's information. Some Omron pedometers include an activity tracker. Start the tracker to record your workout data for a specific period. When you stop the tracker, the results for only that time appear on the screen.

PC Downloading

As of May 2011, only one Omron pedometer, the most expensive unit, offers PC downloading capabilities. The HJ-720ITC pedometer comes with the Omron Health Management Software on a CD-ROM disc. Connect your pedometer to your computer with the included USB cable to download your workout information onto your computer. The software helps you set goals, analyze your progress and track all of your exercise data.
