Whole wheat flour or graham flour is made up of the entire wheat kernel, which includes the germ and the bran of the kernel. It is a light brown color with a coarse texture and a nutty flavor and gives baked goods a heavy, dense texture. Whole wheat flour is a good source of protein, dietary fiber, B-vitamins and vitamin E. You can supplement half of the white flour in any recipe with whole wheat flour.
Step 1
Sift the whole wheat flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt together in a bowl to make pancakes. In a separate bowl, mix egg, brown sugar, buttermilk and oil. Add the egg mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until it is just moistened. Pour about 1/4 cup batter for each pancake onto the griddle and cook until it starts to bubble. Flip the pancake over and cook for another minute.
Step 2
Cream together sugar and butter until light and fluffy to prepare the dough for sugar cookies. Add egg, vanilla extract, almond extract and milk to the sugar and butter; mix well. Stir together whole wheat flour, baking soda, baking powder, nutmeg, salt and orange peel. Add the dry ingredients to the egg mixture and blend with the electric mixer until well-blended. Shape the dough into balls and roll them in sugar. Place the dough balls about 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet. Bake for nine to 10 minutes at 375 degrees Fahrenheit or until the cookies are light brown. Remove them from the cookie sheet and let cool on a wire rack.
Step 3
Combine whole wheat flour, baking soda, milk, egg, oil, honey, apples and cinnamon in a bowl, and then pour this apple-cinnamon muffin mixture into muffin tins. Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Tips and Warnings
- Apple cinnamon muffins can be topped with brown sugar after you remove them from the oven. Whole wheat flour can spoil quickly, so keep it stored in a cool, dry place or in the refrigerator.
