Itchy skin can have many different causes, including allergies, eczema or a skin rash caused by a poisonous plant. If you are experiencing painfully itchy skin, you can soothe your skin using different foods that can be found inside your kitchen pantry, such as oatmeal, honey and chamomile tea.
Oatmeal
Oatmeal contains properties that are thought to be antiseptic, which can be helpful in relieving itching skin as well as soothing skin irritation. Boil 2 cups of water, then add 1 cup of raw rolled oats. Cook the oats over medium heat for five minutes, then turn off the heat. Allow the oatmeal to cool completely for 30 minutes. Spread the oatmeal over your itchy skin and allow it to remain there for 20 minutes. Rinse off the oatmeal with warm water. Repeat as often as you need to relieve the itching.
Honey
Honey contains antibacterial properties that can help your skin stop itching and promote faster healing. Honey can be applied directly to your itchy skin or it can be combined with other ingredients to create a skin mask. Spread 2 tbsp. of honey over your skin and allow the honey to remain on your skin for 15 minutes. Rinse it off with warm water. Honey can also be used in a poultice under bandages to help promote skin healing. Repeat up to three times per day.
Chamomile Tea
Chamomile tea soothes irritation, reduces inflammation and can relieve itchy skin when applied topically. Run a bath with hot water and insert three to four chamomile tea bags in the bath water. Allow the tea bags to steep for 20 minutes, which will also allow the bath water to cool down somewhat. Remove the tea bags and soak in the chamomile tea bath for 20 minutes. Repeat as often as needed to relieve your itchy skin.
Considerations
If you do not see improvement, consult your dermatologist or family doctor. She may be able to prescribe a topical cream that can reduce or eliminate itchiness more effectively than foods can. Discontinue using foods topically if you experience a worsening of your symptoms or if your skin becomes red or inflamed.
