The American College of Sports Medicine offers a variety of certifications, including one for personal trainers. To ensure that all certified personal trainers meet standards, each applicant is required to pass an examination. Applicants do not require any previous experience in fitness, must be 18 years of age and must hold a current adult CPR certification, with practical component, from either the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association. The ACSM has recommended study materials for this examination detailing the knowledge a personal trainer requires and offers workshops. The scope of a personal trainer's job is outlined by the American College of Sports Medicine.
Study Materials
ACSM recommended study materials for the personal trainer examination include several textbooks published by the organization. These three books are the ACSM's Resources for the Personal Trainer, Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription and Certification Review. A study packet is available that contains all three study materials.
Workshops
To facilitate examination preparation, the ACSM offers several optional workshops that trainers can take. The one-day workshop is best for trainers who have been certified in the past that need to renew their certification and have a solid foundation of knowledge. This course provides updates on industry guidelines and solidifies a trainer's knowledge. The three-day workshop is designed for those who need a comprehensive review of personal trainer information and skills.
Examinations
The certification examination is offered daily by Pearson VUE Authorized test centers. It is a computer-based exam and includes photos and video portions. All questions are multiple choice and come in English, Spanish or Simplified Chinese.
Scope of Practice
Certified personal trainers can lead and demonstrate safe exercise practices. They can also recommend a specific program of exercise for individual clients. While unlicensed personal trainers can also provide these services, certification provides the assurance of a standard knowledge base.
