Kidney stones are formed due to the separation of crystals from the urine. When stones are present in the kidneys, the condition is called as nephrolithiasis. Garlic may reduce the incidence of this condition. This herb can be eaten from the clove or taken in the form of a supplement. If you suspect that you have kidney stones, consult with a health care professional.

Kidney Stones

In normal circumstances, chemicals present in urine prevent the formation of stone-forming crystals. However, sometimes these chemicals fail to perform their function. Most of the time, these stones are so small that they pass out along with the urine, but sometimes they grow big enough to obstruct the flow of urine, producing painful symptoms. Symptoms may include pain in the belly, back or groin area.

Types of Kidney Stones

The two most common types of kidney stones are calcium oxalate stones and calcium phosphate stones. These chemicals are found in different parts of the body and are necessary for bone and muscle development, but when they are present in excess they may result in kidney stones. Urinary tract infections may also result in the formation of a stone. This type of kidney stone is called as a struvite or infection stone, and it is likely to return if the infection is not treated.

Properties of Garlic

Garlic, or Allium sativum, is a native herb of Central Asia. It contains powerful compounds that give garlic medicinal properties. One such compound is allicin, which is believed to give garlic antibiotic properties. It is also the compound behind the strong smell of garlic. One mg of allicin is as potent as 15 standard units of penicillin. In addition to its antibiotic properties, garlic is said to boost the immune system, reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and prevent clotting of the blood. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, helps lower blood sugar and aids in weight loss. Garlic is also said to possess anti-cancer properties.

Garlic and Kidney Stones

Garlic has been known for its antibiotic activity. This property of garlic is important in reducing struvite kidney stones. It stimulates production of nitric oxide and hydrogen sulphide which relax the blood vessels. This improves the circulation of the kidneys and prevents the formation of infection stones. Garlic is also believed to contain vitamin B-6 which helps reduce the levels of urinary oxalate. It also exerts a diuretic action which helps flush out small stones.
