Almonds are typically safe to eat during pregnancy unless you have an allergy. As long as you choose healthy varieties of almonds and include other foods in your diet, you can enjoy almonds and the nutrients they provide in a variety of ways. If you are unsure about your pregnancy diet, talk to your doctor so that you can establish an eating plan.

Benefits

Almonds are a source of calcium, which is necessary for strengthening your teeth and bones, as well as those of your developing baby. They also contain protein, which provides you with energy and fuel. Almonds also pack some fiber, which can make you feel full for longer and make your stools softer, helping to prevent constipation that occur during pregnancy.

Safety

Almonds are a safe snack during pregnancy. They contain a high amount of fat, but it is monounsaturated fat that will not raise your cholesterol levels. Avoid almonds if there is a chance you could be allergic to any kind of tree nut. A severe allergic reaction during pregnancy can be dangerous for you and your unborn baby. When choosing almonds, the American Dietetic Association recommends that you look for unsalted varieties to avoid the excess sodium that can lead to high blood pressure and swelling.

Recommendations

Almonds are a convenient snack. Babycenter recommends pairing them with dried fruit and whole grain cereal for a healthy trail mix you can store in a plastic bag and carry anywhere. You can also try pairing almonds with fruit and yogurt, adding slivered almonds to a salad, or using crushed almonds as a breading for chicken or fish.

Considerations

Keep in mind that too much of one type of food is not ideal during pregnancy. You need a balance of protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables to supply you and your baby with all of the necessary nutrients. Be sure to keep an eye on your intake of almonds and eat them as part of a varied, balanced diet.
